Modern Foreign Languages - Year 10 Exams– Guide for Revision

You will have been clearly explained what and how you need to revise for your exams by your foreign language teacher in your lessons. However, below is a reminder of how to best prepare for the four exams:

Speaking Exam

Role-Play:

  • Go through all the sample role-plays in your Brookfield booklet and prepare as many of them as you can
  • Revise how to ask questions in the formal and informal way (there is a page in the Brookfield booklet about questions)
  • Revise all your questions words in the foreign language (who, where, how etc)
  • Revise your time phrases in all 3 tenses (last year, tomorrow, usually etc)
  • Practise saying sentences in all 3 tenses ( I went, I go, I will go etc)

PhotoCard

  • Go through all the sample photocards in your Brookfield booklet and prepare as many of them as you can
  • Practise describing photos using the PALMO method (see Brookfield booklet) and revise how to say expressions like (there is/ a man/ a woman/ he looks/ they look/ it reminds me when/ the photo was taken etc)
  • Practise extending your answers by using the pyramid method (add extra details, different subject pronouns, complex opinions, different tenses etc)

General Conversation

  • Go through all the questions and answers in your Brookfield booklet on the topics that we have covered so far and revise/ learn as many of them as you can
  • Learn by heart the answers to the questions on your “chosen topic” and get somebody to test you on them
  • Revise how to ask questions in the informal way as you will need to ask questions to your teacher
Writing Exam
  • Go through the writing exams you have already sat and look through your teacher’s feedback
  • Using your Pearson Translation & Grammar workbook, revise all the main tenses (past, present, future)  and revise all the verbs endings – Practise exercises on tenses in that workbook and in the AQA Revision workbook (purple); there are lots of practise at the back of the workbook.
  • Using your Brookfield booklet, revise all the vocabulary that AQA expects you to know on the topics we have covered so far. Make flashcards, practise the words you had forgotten using the look, cover, write, check method and get somebody at home to test you on the difficult ones
  • Revise all the GCSE complex structures and complex opinions (see Brookfield booklet) to make sure you can write to grade 9 standard
Reading Exam
  • Using your Brookfield booklet, revise all the vocabulary that AQA expects you to know on the topics we have covered so far. Make flashcards, practise the words you had forgotten using the look, cover, write, check method and get somebody at home to test you on the difficult ones
  • Do lots of practise reading exercises in your Pearson Revision workbook (purple) - Look at the page of contents for the topics we have already covered and complete all reading exercises on these topics that you haven’t done yet.
  • Go on the AQA website – complete as many GCSE reading past papers as possible from the 2011-2016 Spec.
  • Go to BBC Bitesize website and practise reading exercises there too
Listening Exam
  • Using your Brookfield booklet, revise all the vocabulary that AQA expects you to know on the topics we have covered so far. Make flashcards, practise the words you had forgotten using the look, cover, write, check method and get somebody at home to test you on the difficult ones
  • Do lots of practise listening exercises in your Pearson Revision workbook (purple) – Look at the page of contents for the topics we have already covered and complete all listening exercises on these topics that you haven’t done yet.
  • Go on the AQA website – complete as many GCSE listening past papers as possible from the 2011-2016 Spec.
  • Go to BBC Bitesize website and practise listening exercises there too
