On behalf of FOBS members, the committee has agreed to fund the installation of a permanent plaque and other improvements to the memorial garden dedicated to Mr Sukram (Ainslie House). This will include replacing the wooden puzzle boards with permanent metal versions and a brass plaque mounted on a solid wooden base. The work should be completed shortly and you will be able to see the finished result in the garden behind the main reception block, where the planting scheme undertaken last year is now starting to mature and develop.
We funded the purchase of 2 iPads for drama/dance department. These enable students to record performances and instantly watch them back on a large screen. They also allow the ability to pause video and highlight and annotate on top of the video in lessons through video analysis apps. These are then be distributed to students for their log books and for their revision notes. In future, it is hoped the iPads will be used to control the lighting equipment instead of a lighting desk, allowing technical students to use more up to date methods to control the lighting equipment.
The Committee are pleased to have secured a grant of £675 which will be used for the purchase of 5 new tablets for short observation feedback to support teaching and learning at Brookfield.
Thanks to your support, the Committee has been able to donate £500 to Maths department for the purchase of an online subscription for all students to the Mathswatch tool. This fantastic resource contains video clips for each topic of the GCSE syllabus along with accompanying worksheets and practice exercises, all with fully worked solutions. There is also a 'One Minute Maths' section containing short video clips for each topic, which will be useful for any last minute revision! Also included are revision timetables and schedules to assist students in organising their time to revise for the Maths GCSE exams, as well as clips and practice exercises for all of the Key Stage 3 topics too - so students in years 7 and 8 will also benefit.
This year, as well as supporting the Brookfield pupil reward scheme, FOBS has also funded the provision of an iPad for PE department. The PE team now have two iPads at their disposal and both staff and pupils are benefitting from the technology now at their fingertips. Teaching time is maximised as registration can now be done indoors or outdoors. The department has downloaded numerous applications, some of which can provide real-time feedback to the pupils. For example, pupil technique can be filmed, played back to the student and the teacher can give immediate feedback to advise them how to improve their technique. And there are no more arguments or confusion – game rules can be checked instantly on the internet.
Here’s what some of the students have to say about the iPads:-
“Although Gymnastics is one of my strong points, everyone needs to improve. To be able to watch things back, compare and slow the video down is great. Even the smallest of things can be seen. “ JD
“I found the iPads really useful because we could see what we were doing wrong, correct it and improve it. Also, we circled the things we needed to correct and were able to put the video in slow motion which really helped.” EB
The teaching staff have told us that:
Since September 2010, FOBS has been proudly supporting the Brookfield Reward Scheme. This scheme motivates all our students by rewarding those who always strive to do their best, both inside and outside the classroom. House points can be earned for many different reasons including schoolwork, attendance, voluntary work in the community, representing the school in competitions (academic, sporting, dance/drama, music) ….. for any number of reasons really – the list is endless!
To give you an idea of the magnitude of the scheme, in a 6-month period this year, rewards given out included:
