Year 8 into 9 Options

Everyone will study Core Subjects: English Language and Literature, Maths, Science, Physical Education, Computer Studies, a Modern Foreign Languages, Religious Studies, and Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE). You will also study 5 option subjects.

In Year 9, everybody will continue to study the language they studied in years 7 and 8 as part of their core curriculum. Some students will be selected by their current languages teacher to have the opportunity to study an additional second language. If you are selected, you may choose the additional second language as one of your options*.

You have 4 decisions to make:

  1. Choose History or Geography as your first option subject.
Every student must choose either History or Geography as one of their options in Year 9. You can choose both subjects if you wish, which would fill two of your five option slots.
  2. Choose your 4 other options subjects.
Give this careful thought because you won’t be able to study a subject in Year 10 and 11 unless you have studied it in Year 9. Also, you cannot choose both Music and Music Technology, or both Art & Design (Fine Art) and Art & Design (Textiles), or both D&T (Graphics) and D&T (Resistant Materials). If you are selected for the opportunity to study an additional second language as described above, you may choose the language as one of these 4 options.
  3. Choose one subject as a Reserve
Your Reserve is a backup option, in case one of your options above is not available. We will do our best to give you your ideal choices, but it is not always possible, so it is important to have considered a reserve.
  4. Decide between Core PE or Pre-GCSE PE / Sports Studies
If you choose the Pre-GCSE PE/Sport Studies Course in Year 9 you will have the opportunity to opt for either GCSE PE or Cambridge National Sport Studies when you do your final options in year 9. If you do not choose the Pre-GCSE PE/Sports Studies Course in Year 9, you will continue with Core PE lessons throughout Years 9, 10 and 11. This choice is in addition to your Options choices – so it won’t take up one of your Option slots.
