Why We Develop SMSC at Brookfield

At Brookfield, our commitment to Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development is at the heart of everything we do. As outlined in our SMSC Policy, we strive to create a culture of happiness, success and personal fulfilment, enabling all young people to be the very best they can be.

Our school ethos is underpinned by the values of Kindness, Respect and Responsibility, which are reflected through our curriculum, pastoral support and wider school community. We encourage students to value themselves, their families, their school community and the diverse society in which they live. Through these values, students learn to show kindness towards others, respect different perspectives and cultures, and take responsibility for their actions and contributions both within school and beyond.

SMSC development promotes important qualities such as honesty, fairness, empathy and a sense of duty. It also supports students in understanding and embracing the fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. These principles help prepare our students to become thoughtful, responsible and active citizens who make a positive contribution to modern society.

By embedding SMSC throughout school life, we aim to ensure that every student leaves Brookfield as a confident, respectful and responsible young person, ready to succeed in the next stage of their education, employment and life.

SMSC Spotlight

As part of our Personal Development programme, tutor groups regularly explore SMSC Spotlight topics that encourage students to think deeply about issues that are topical, relevant and sometimes challenging. Students are presented with a range of viewpoints and information to stimulate discussion, reflection and respectful debate.

These discussions provide valuable opportunities for students to demonstrate Brookfield's values of Kindness, Respect and Responsibility, while developing their spiritual, moral, social and cultural understanding. Tutor groups share their thoughts and responses through displays and activities across the school, helping to promote a culture where every voice is valued and differences are respected.
